Since 1993, the population of the elderly persons has reached 7% in Taiwan, and it has officially entered an aging society by then. Taiwan began to promote advanced social education at that time, started to
increase welfare and services for the elderly person that provide various preferential treatment and facilities.
There is almost a perfection from Taiwan’s social education and welfare as the Long-term Care 1.0 program has been implemented for years and the Long-term Care 2.0 program in recent years. In order to understand Taiwan’s pattern and model in fields of operating, resource management and challenges encountered, Unilifesity Learning Center decided to visit Taiwan on August 25th, 2019 to gain more knowledge.
Unilifesity Learning Center has visited many different types of elderly service centers such as Taipei Zhongshan Seniors Housing and Service Center, Taipei Fuhua Senior Multi-Service Center, Stella Matutina Social Welfare Foundation, and Lin Chenghui Foundation. In addition,
some centers like Liu-Kuei Christian Mountain Children’s Home, which has the same philosophy of caring about people was also visited by Kendek Unilifesity.
Through this rare opportunity, Unilifesity Learning Center recorded interviews with several senior instructors, including Dr. Yu Chia Chen, Associate Professor of Citizen Service Management Department and senior of National Tainan Junior Nursing College, Dr. Lin Siang Jyun, Professor of LOHAS and Future Studies Department, Fo Guang University, Dr.Ho Chen-Yu, Assistant Professor of Social Work Department, National Quemoy University and more. These senior advisors shared their own experiences and suggestions to Kendek Unilifesity and Malaysians who are new to this area of welfare.
Great gain of knowledge was obtained in Taiwan even though it was a short trip. Mixed feelings were brought back from the visit and not only so, development potential of elderly service sector was also discovered. This has laid the foundation of developing education plan for elderly person.
